PEACEPLUS-Funded ONEHEALTH Project Launches to Tackle Health Challenges Across Borders

The ONEHEALTH project, funded by €9.85M from PEACEPLUS, brings together cross-border partners to tackle human, animal, and environmental health challenges through AI and collaborative innovation.

A bold new cross-border initiative — ONEHEALTH — has been awarded €9.85 million through the PEACEPLUS Programme to address the deep, complex connections between human, animal and environmental health. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence and collaborative research, the project seeks to reshape public health outcomes and build economic resilience across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Led by Catalyst and involving partners including Queen’s University Belfast, Atlantic Technological University, University of Galway, Tyndall National Institute, and HIRANI, ONEHEALTH brings together academic institutions, SMEs, and policy leaders to design and deliver innovative health solutions at scale.

At Queen’s, Momentum One Zero is proud to support this work through our Digital One Health Hub — a cornerstone of our innovation mission that is already focused on using data and digital technologies to improve lives and health outcomes. ONEHEALTH represents a powerful next step on that journey. The project also draws on interdisciplinary expertise from Queen’s School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, School of Biological Sciences, and the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.

Professor Mark Lawler, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Digital Health at Queen’s, and Health Lead for the Momentum One Zero Innovation Centre, said:

"ONEHEALTH is a game-changer, uniting unrivalled academic and industry expertise from across the island of Ireland to address the greatest challenges in human health. Through Momentum One Zero, we are excited to apply a digitally enhanced, data-informed approach that delivers new business opportunities, boosts skills, and supports jobs across the region.”

The initiative aligns directly with Momentum One Zero’s commitment to mission-driven innovation — connecting researchers, entrepreneurs and communities through our four thematic hubs. In particular, the Digital One Health Hub is designed to turn cutting-edge research into scalable, real-world solutions — and ONEHEALTH is a powerful platform to do exactly that.

Dr Stephen McCabe, Executive Director of Momentum One Zero, commented:

We’re incredibly proud to support Queen’s in delivering on this ambitious vision. ONEHEALTH is more than a project — it’s a reflection of what Momentum One Zero stands for: collaboration, innovation, and impact. Our Digital One Health Hub has been laying the groundwork for this kind of integrated health ecosystem, and we’re excited to help accelerate that transformation across the region.”

Over the next four years, ONEHEALTH will foster new research collaborations, provide hands-on support to SMEs, and explore how AI and digital tools can help solve long-standing health and sustainability challenges — from data fragmentation to workforce development and regional health equity.

By building new partnerships and applying research in practical, community-driven ways, ONEHEALTH offers a vision for a healthier, more connected island — one that Momentum One Zero is proud to help shape.
